There is no doubt that India and UK had a long history of trade and the ties are strong. But as every tree needs nourishment from external food and water, so is the case with these global ties. The big hindrance which is raising uncertainties is, of course, Brexit which is near and is becoming hard to swallow for Britain as well as the world.
There have been some very solid yet positive steps to be taken so that the country can become an outward-looking nation. Global ties are a very tricky thing to maintain and every tiny aspect renders big outcomes; they can be positive as well as negative.
There is less traffic of students approaching for study purpose and due to this; some unrest can be detected in India. Nothing can flourish between the two countries until unless it is on the equal basis formula.
Now, if you take what British Government members feel about the removal of international students. They take it as a positive step and support maintaining its own higher education standards.
You see what is happening is that Britain is at one hand going to establish its own being as an important member of UK to India trade and also as a country internationally, and then it has to see what offers can mediate the effects of any negative step (as seen from the outer world). The visas are restricted to Indian students and there is no special treatment being given to them which was earlier common for this part of the world.
In the mid of last year, India in a very serious tone conveyed its message to Britain that it has to increase the quota of Indian immigrants if there is any chance of keeping a fruitful relationship in the trade or otherwise, which Britain respected but restrained from agreeing as there is already a good policy regarding this.
And now the students’ part is an issue. The problem is that when as a student you go there, people expect to do some work after completion of the degree. This is to compensate for the investment and then go back in a position to do something reasonable for them. This opportunity is being taken away from them which is creating problems.
The time to act is now for Britain or it will be too late. A very good contract can be of two years with the students. They can work for this time on the condition of returning to India which is necessary. This way they can gain global experience and serve their own country on return. The ease with which Indians really adjust in the country attracts them, and some settlement is eagerly required from Britain.
